India just took a bold, solitary stand at the WTO’s 14th Ministerial Conference in Cameroon, rejecting a China-backed Investment Facilitation for Development (IFD) Agreement that 128 countries support. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said the deal risks undermining the WTO’s foundational principles. With South Africa and Turkey both withdrawing their opposition in recent months, India is now the only holdout. In this video, we break down what the IFD Agreement is, why China pushed it, why 98 of 128 supporting countries are Belt and Road members, and what India’s real strategy might be. Union Minister Shri Piyush Goyal highlighted that India’s Free Trade Agreements are opening new opportunities for the pharmaceutical, healthcare and medical technology sectors, while strengthening India’s position in global trade. Over the past three to three-and-a-half years, India has signed nine FTAs, expanding market access and creating new opportunities for exporters. These agreements are benefiting farmers, MSMEs and innovation sectors, while reinforcing India’s global reputation as the “Pharmacy of the World.” #DoC_GoI #IndiaExports #GlobalTrade #FTAs @pibindia

The 14th Ministerial Conference in Yaoundé highlighted a major divide. While progress was made on integrating small economies, India stood firm against big-player biases in Fisheries Subsidies and Investment Facilitation (IFD) to protect its domestic interests and the WTO’s consensus-based roots. #WTOMC14 #GlobalTrade #IndiaAtWTO #PiyushGoyal #EconomicPolicy #FisheriesSubsidies #DigitalTrade #Yaounde2026 #WTOReform #TradeJustice #GlobalSouth

India continues to take a clear and balanced stand at the World Trade Organization (WTO), prioritising farmers, food security, and fair global trade. By focusing on Public Stockholding (PSH), Special Safeguard Mechanism (SSM), and supporting stability under Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS), India is strengthening a predictable and inclusive global trade system. #DoC_GoI #IndiaAtWTO #GlobalTrade #IndiaExports @pibindia

For the first time since India pulled out of the China-led Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) negotiations in 2019, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal held bilateral talks with his Chinese counterpart Wang Wentao on the sidelines of the 14th World Trade Organisation (WTO) interministerial conference in Cameroon last week. “I also met after a long time, the minister from China with whom we discussed ways to expand trade, move towards more balanced trade and generate trust to help smooth bilateral trade between China and India and give greater opportunity for our exporters to export our pharmaceuticals, engineering goods, fish and farm products. All in all, a good start to generating greater opportunities for our exporters in China,” Goyal said Thursday while speaking about bilateral engagements at the WTO. The talks between the two ministers come at a time when trade tensions between the two countries, simmering since 2020, have been showing signs of easing. While China has eased restriction of rare earth magnets and stepped up imports of Indian goods, Delhi has also moderated its restrictions on Chinese investments. However, India has maintained its opposition to a China-led proposal at the WTO. After South Africa lifted its opposition to the Investment Facilitation for Development (IFD), India was the only country blocking the investment agreement. “India has successfully been able to ensure that a plurilateral like Investment Facilitation for Development (IFD) cannot be brought into the Annexure 4 of the Marrakesh agreement,” Goyal said. India-China relations had taken a hit following Chinese incursions along the Line of Actual Control in eastern Ladakh, more so after the Galwan Valley clash in June 2020. A month before the clash, India had imposed restrictions on investments from China through Press Note 3 (PN3) in April 2020, making government approval mandatory for investments from countries sharing a land border with India. The move was aimed at preventing opportunistic takeovers during the Covid-19 pandemic and had remained in force amid heightened national security concerns following the Galwan clash. #china #india #export

India has strongly opposed the China-backed Investment Facilitation for Development (IFD) Agreement being included under the World Trade Organization framework during the ongoing ministerial talks in Cameroon. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said that bringing this pact into WTO rules could undermine the organisation’s core principles and functional structure. India has taken a lone stand, especially after countries like Türkiye withdrew objections, while over 130 WTO members support the deal. This content is owned by pulse media network.
