TOA compiler works in multiple phases to transform high level source code into executable instructions. It starts with lexical analysis where the code is broken into tokens followed by syntax analysis which checks the grammatical structure of the program. Semantic analysis then ensures that the code makes logical sense by validating types scopes and declarations.
After the program is semantically correct the compiler generates an intermediate representation. This intermediate code is platform independent and makes the program easier to analyze and transform. The compiler then performs code optimisation to improve performance by removing redundant operations and simplifying computations without changing program behavior.
Once optimized the compiler performs code generation and converts the intermediate code into target specific assembly or low level instructions. At this point the compiler has finished its job but the program is still not directly executable.
The assembler converts the generated assembly code into machine code and produces object files. These object files contain binary instructions along with symbol and relocation information but cannot run independently. The linker then combines multiple object files and libraries resolves external references and produces a final executable.
Finally the loader loads the executable into memory allocates space for code data stack and heap resolves dynamic libraries and sets the entry point. The CPU then begins execution and the program starts running completing the journey from source code to a live process.
