Spin Top Carousel: two spin tops of the same mass hang balanced on the ends of a beam such that their rotational motion is allowed to transfer to the system as a whole. The tops are set to spin as usual, but here small neodymium magnets are embedded in the tops of their stems which allows them to connect and hang from metal pins in the beam. The physics of how the angular momentum of the tops is transferred to the rotation of the system of this new toy is only recently understood. Made by German artisan Kurt Juergen Weigl. The magnetized tip of the spin top connects to a smooth metal cutout, but since the top is much more massive, the metal cutout moves creating the curious motion. Tornado Spheres: two ball bearings welded together can be made to spin up to 2000+ rpm by the Magnus Effect using a stream of air. Looks (and sounds) amazing at high speed. Physical Pendulum Kinetic Chaos: two lucite spheres are set to rotate freely along three perpendicular axes in another amazing vintage kinetic sculpture by John Anderson (1974). An interesting design feature is that one horizontal axis is offset from the other two leading to more intricate motions. Spinning a Liquid Paperweight: two immiscible fluids are sorted under gravity by density with the densest on the bottom and the lightest on top, and four bottom heavy solid objects with an intermediate density are constrained to the boundary. If the container is rotated, as seen here in 240 fps slow motion, the boundary between the layers forms a parabola due to the added influence of centripetal acceleration, but initially the fluid also peaks in the center due to the tea leaf effect until all the liquid is rotating at the same rate. Tautochrone Curve: celebrating Pi day with a cycloid curve oriented to produce a path which has the special property that the time it takes for an object to slide to the bottom under gravity is the same no matter how high it starts up the curve. Also, t = π√(R/g) the time it takes is always equal to pi times the square root of the cycloid radius divided by g. Presented here are three instances of two spheres being released at the same time, and each time they reach the bottom and collide at the center- even if one sphere is released much lower than the other!
