Box braids are a style that I consider to be potentially harmful but can be safe if done correctly. If your edges are intact, hair is freshly washed, deep conditioned and moisturized, then go for it, using the tips in this video! PROS: One of the most beautiful low maintenance styles, offers a ton of convenience, You don’t have to worry too much about getting your hair wet, and it’s easy to see your new- growth. CONS: The average person is not washing their hair for months in order to preserve the style, so yeast and buildup on the scalp often thrives, The hair can be very heavy or very tight, leading to traction, especially on the edges AND the extensions themselves (typically synthetic hairs) are composed of nylon, acrylic or polyester fibers that can be rough against the hair cuticle leading to breakage up the hair shaft and split ends. This is often why people feel like their hair seemed to have grown so much from the roots with braids, but then remains the same length. So you wanna get “box braids”? Here’s how to do it like a dermatologist Prep your hair before it goes in - only braid freshly washed, deep conditioned hair with healthy ends. Human hair instead of synthetic hair (made from acrylic, nylon, polyester etc) which can rub against your hair cuticle and lead to breakage Opt for larger diameter styles - the smaller the braids are, a greater amount of tension is being handled by fewer hairs, leading to traction and breakage If they hurt, if they are too tight, if you see pulling, take them out IMMEDIATELY. A cute 4-8 weeks is NOT worth months/years of hair loss Leave them in for only 4-6 weeks. I knowwww I know they are expensive, but the longer they are in, the more likely you are to have breakage Keep up your scalp and hair care while in the style. I recommend washing every 1-2 weeks, and leave-in/oil combo to your ends every 2-3 days. Mousse on top and a silk scarf can help to manage frizz Take your SWEET TIME taking out the style to avoid accidentally cutting or breaking off your hair. And who should NOT get this style? Anyone with edges that are already broken off and we’re trying to bring them back.
