She was one of the most beautiful and celebrated socialites of the Edwardian era. Daisy Cornwallis-West, with her wasp waist, cascade of dark hair, and striking beauty, was a true star. She married one of the wealthiest aristocrats in Germany, Hans Heinrich XV, Prince of Pless. And so, the British beauty became the mistress of an incredible fortune and two fairy-tale castles in Silesia - Pless and Fürstenstein. Her life was like a fairy tale. She wore gowns from the finest Parisian couturiers, dazzling jewels, and hosted kings and emperors. She was a close friend of Britain's King Edward VII and a confidante of Germany's Kaiser Wilhelm II. She was a living bridge between two great empires. But behind this dazzling facade hid a deep melancholy. Daisy, who had grown up in the relatively free and informal atmosphere of the British aristocracy, felt suffocated in the rigid, militaristic, and stiflingly formal German court. She was a brightly colored bird trapped in a Teutonic iron cage. Her marriage, which had begun with passion, quickly grew cold. She desperately tried to find a purpose, pouring her energy and money into charity, helping the poor miners on her husband's estates. She tried to reform society, but she was always seen as a frivolous foreigner. And then, disaster struck. World War I. This war was not just a political conflict; for Daisy, it was a personal tragedy. The two countries she loved, England and Germany, were now mortal enemies. She was trapped. Her brother fought on one side, her husband on the other. She worked as a Red Cross nurse, caring for the wounded from both sides, but she was always suspected of being a spy. After the war, her world collapsed completely. Her marriage fell apart, her fortune was lost, and her health, ravaged by multiple sclerosis, deteriorated. The fairy-tale princess who had once been the queen of European society ended her days in poverty and obscurity in a sanatorium, in a land that now belonged to Poland. #royals #history #princess #germany #edwardian
