SP🎆 CORREFOCS 🔥😈 Devil Fire Runs —honestly this is the craziest thing I’ve seen so far since moving here 🤣🤣
💥 Welcome to correfocs (aka “fire runs”), one of the most exciting and unique traditions here in Catalunya. It’s a strange combination of ‘devils’, fireworks, and people of all ages dancing under a shower of sparks. It’s chaotic, loud, a little terrifying—and completely unforgettable!!!
So, why correfocs?
Correfocs originated in medieval Catalunya as part of “els balls de diables” (the dance of the devils). These performances symbolized the eternal battle between good and evil, with fire representing the devil’s chaos. Today, they’ve basically turned into crazy show of sparks and drums, where everyone (yes even kids!!) joins in.
When do they happen?
You’ll typically find correfocs during local festes majors (big town festivals) or other traditional celebrations. One of the most famous takes place during La Mercè in Barcelona (which is where this video was taken!), where the streets explode with fire, music, and a chaotic energy. It’s a tradition full of history, meaning, and community spirit.
Are correfocs only a Catalan thing?
Mostly, yes! Correfocs are a proud Catalan tradition, but you might also find them in areas like Valencia and the Balearic Islands. Outside of that, they’re pretty rare—so consider yourself lucky if you get to see one!
Pro tips if you go:
- Wear long sleeves and a hat to protect yourself from sparks.
- Avoid synthetic fabrics—they can melt if they come into contact with fire.
- Keep a safe distance at first, then join in when you feel ready.
- Bring earplugs if you’re sensitive to loud noises.
- Stay aware of your surroundings—devils can appear from anywhere!
- Most importantly, have fun and embrace the chaos!
👉 Have you ever seen a correfoc before? Would you be brave enough to jump in? Let me know in the comments!
