Cortisol is a stress hormone that can be useful. Everyone has it. Your body produces it naturally, but the problem is we have chronically stressed out people, which produces excess cortisol. When you’re in a state of stress, your body produces more cortisol and adrenaline. And when you’re producing more of those hormones, those hormones suppress your immune system, which is a connection to cancer. They also promote inflammation. So those two factors; inflammation and immunosuppression, create an environment where cancer can thrive! ✳️ Here are a few ways to get cortisol under control: • Fruits and vegetables (anti-inflammatory and helps calm down your nervous system.) • Exercise • Forgive (including yourself. Let go of resentment and anger. Address any unresolved issue.) • Turn off the news (shield yourself from stressful information.) • Prayer and meditation • Choose joy • Choose happiness When you actively choose to think positively, it brings your body out of a state of fight or flight, anxiety, fear, and elevated cortisol. This is going to be a DAILY practice! You can’t just flip a switch. It’s a habit. It’s a discipline to catch yourself when you start to get worked up emotionally. The 3am wake up. The afternoon crash. The belly fat that won’t move. The mood that doesn’t feel like yours. That’s not four different problems, that’s your cortisol! Cortisol isn’t your enemy, it’s essential, without it you’d be dead. The problem is what happens when it never turns off. In a healthy body cortisol is highest in the morning and falls all day. In perimenopause/ menopause, that rhythm breaks down completely. It spikes when it should fall. It surges at 3am when it should be at its lowest. And when it stays dysregulated it deposits fat on your belly, suppresses melatonin so you can’t sleep, blocks your thyroid conversion and displaces your progesterone. All of that. One hormone. Crazy right? Here’s what makes it worse, a single morning blood draw tells you almost nothing. Normal at 8am says nothing about what’s happening at noon, 4pm, or 3am. The test that actually matters is a four point cortisol panel across the full day, which is never ordered. But we order it within Metabolic Mastery! Your cortisol number is normal. Along with the time I was experiencing my hair loss I was also having brain fog, trouble sleeping, anxiety, a constant upset stomach and so on. When I did all the tests, all my labs were “fine” but I knew something was off and have spent quite a bit of time now learning and researching. Are you struggling with unexplained symptoms? At least in my case, I’m a firm believer I was dealing with high cortisol levels brought on by overworked adrenals.
