Giant clams (Tridacna species) are some of the largest mollusks in the world. Their shells form over many years through slow calcium growth, influenced by water temperature, reef health, and tides. Finding one like this is a reminder of why protecting marine ecosystems matters. Also these species are highly protected and removing them from the beaches is prohibited. This video is only for educational purposes and the shell was left where we found it. #shelloftheday

This is what it is! 👇🏼 This is a Sea Urchin that is using his tube feet to stick to me! 🦶 Tube feet have so many functions for a sea urchin, one of them being to move! They use them by extending and attaching moving themselves across surfaces! 🏃🏽‍♂️ They have a special adhesive on them that allows them to stick onto rocks even in strong currents, also if they lose one they can grow them back! 😍 They are herbivores, feeding on algae, kelp and detritus! Making them a really important part of the ecosystem controlling algae growth and helping with biodiversity! 🍙 Have you ever seen one of these in Cornwall? 👇🏼 #cornwall #cornwallcoast #wildlife #forage #seacreature fyp

During a December dive on Creche reef, we came across this mesmerizing sight: a Common Egg Cowrie (Ovula ovum) slowly gliding over a leather coral, gently feeding along the way. In the video, you can clearly see where it’s been feeding — the coral tissue turns strikingly white in the grazed areas, while the untouched parts remain rich brown with live polyps still present. It’s a perfect visual of how these little snails delicately remove the surface layer as they eat. These stunning snails are perfectly suited to life on soft, leathery corals like toadstool types — their glossy white, egg-shaped shell stays mostly hidden beneath a velvety black mantle dotted with tiny white spots, creating nature’s ultimate camouflage cloak! Using their delicate rasping “tongue” (the radula), they graze in calm, graceful sweeps. The video captures that peaceful rhythm so beautifully — just a quiet wanderer in its underwater world. Even though leather corals have natural defenses, the Egg Cowrie feels right at home, turning challenges into its daily meal. It’s a gentle reminder of the reef’s intricate balance: every creature plays a part in the web of life down there. What’s your favorite tiny reef encounter?

Throwback to my wife finding our best checkered cowrie yet. I was a just a little excited 😅🤣. We’ve only found a handful of these so we appreciate each one we find. This cowrie was deemed “one of the most prized cowries in the world” by Stephen Quirk in the 1970’s. #shells #shell #seashell #fypage #fyp **repost

How they grab/stick to you: Tube Feet (Podia): These suction-cup-tipped appendages are used for movement, respiration, and anchoring. When you touch them, they extend and attach, creating a sticky hold that can feel like a gentle, persistent grab. Spines: Each spine is on a ball joint and can rotate to point at a disturbance, effectively turning towards the source of touch as a defensive posture. Pedicellariae: Some species have tiny, venomous pincers (pedicellariae) that can latch onto skin, injecting toxins and causing pain, which is a stronger reaction to perceived danger.

Those beautiful, coiled “crowie shell” isn’t a shell at all, it’s an egg case full of developing baby snails. You’re not touching a seashell; you’re touching a fragile nursery for hundreds of tiny predatory sea snails (like whelks). Disturbing it can crush the embryos inside or knock it loose, destroying the next generation of important ocean hunters. . . . . . #MarineLifeMystery #DangerousMarineFinds #ProtectMarineLife #BeachHazardAlert #WhatNotToTouchAtTheBeach

😭 A conch is a type of large marine snail known for its distinctively spiral-shaped shell. These shells, often vibrant in color and elegantly curved, are produced by sea snails belonging to the family *Strombidae*, with the queen conch being one of the most well-known species. Conches inhabit warm, shallow waters—especially in the Caribbean—and play an important ecological role by grazing on algae and contributing to the balance of marine ecosystems. Their shells, once vacated, may also become homes for other sea creatures such as hermit crabs. Beyond their biological characteristics, conches have held cultural, artistic, and practical significance for centuries. Their shells are often used as decorative objects, musical instruments, or ceremonial items. In many cultures, blowing into a conch shell produces a resonant horn-like sound and is used in rituals, announcements, or symbolic acts. Conch shells have also been crafted into jewelry and tools, valued for their durability and beauty. Thus, the conch is not only an intriguing marine animal but also a meaningful artifact woven into human traditions around the world.

Sand bubbler crabs are tiny coastal creatures that turn beaches into living art galleries. As they feed, these crabs scoop up sand, extract microscopic food particles, and then discard the cleaned sand in perfectly spaced pellets around their burrows. Over time, this repetitive and precise behavior creates stunning radial patterns that look like carefully designed artwork, even though it’s simply the result of survival and instinct. Each pattern is unique, shaped by the tide, sunlight, and the crab’s movement, showing how nature creates beauty without intention. #sandbubblercrab #natureart #beachpatterns #naturaldesign #wildlifebehavior #coastallife #tinycreatures #natureisamazing #beachart #oceanlife #instinctualart #naturepatterns

It’s a story of how the smallest seeds can have the biggest impact. If coral is the heart of the Reef, seagrasses are the kidneys. Seagrass sequesters carbon, filters pollution and traps fine sediment. They also feed and shelter vulnerable marine species. A single seagrass flower can produce around 15 seeds that can grow into one hectare of thriving seagrass meadow. It’s definitely an impact worth investing in.
