FRDanzig - “Mother” (1989)
Former Misfits singer Glenn Danzig was fronting the band Samhain when, in 1986, Rick Rubin saw them performing at The Ritz in New York. Rubin was scouting bands for his new label, Def Jam Recordings, and invited Glenn to sign. Rubin suggested he change his group’s name to his last name to avoid issues with future lineup changes, and so the band Danzig was formed.
“Mother” appeared on Danzig’s self-titled debut album in 1988 (which Rubin produced), while the promotional single was issued in August 1989. It’s still the band’s highest charting song, peaking at number 43 in the US charts and 62 in the UK. Interestingly, these chart appearances weren’t until 1994, when “Mother” was re-released as a single in a slightly remixed form.
