Fact: That Darn Cat (1997) This Disney remake of the 1965 classic stars Christina Ricci as Patti Randall, a cynical teenager who finds a “help” message on her cat’s collar, leading her into a kidnapping mystery.
In the scene above, Patti delivers the quintessential 90s alt-girl line, “Because it matches my soul,” a nod to the deadpan, dark persona Ricci perfected in The Addams Family.
Interestingly, the film features a cameo by Dean Jones, who played the lead FBI agent in the original 1965 version, though here he plays the wealthy Mr. Flint.
While the film was marketed as a family comedy, it leaned heavily into Ricci’s “sullen teen” archetype to appeal to the Goosebumps and Clarissa Explains It All generation.
Despite mixed reviews, the “matches my soul” quote remains one of the most shared movie memes for anyone who refuses to wear color.
