Splitting can be so tough to stop. While there are a ton of DBT skills helpful for coping with and reducing splitting—the STOP skill, the TIP skills, Check The Facts, dialectics, etc—my biggest advice is to practice the Cope Ahead skill. By repeatedly imagining yourself using skills to cope with intense emotions and thoughts, rather than splitting, you’ll increase the likelihood you’ll actually do so. Imagining in our heads is similar to practicing, so diving into your detailed coping plan and fantasizing about it may be the thing to help you overcome splitting! Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) helps manage all-or-nothing (black-and-white) thinking by teaching you to hold two seemingly opposite things that can be true at the same time. 🧠🤔 • Both/And Thinking: Instead of “either/or” DBT promotes “both/and” (e.g., “My partner is ignoring me” and “Maybe they are busy”) • Synthesis of Opposites: The central dialectic is balance between acceptance (validating your current feelings) and change (working toward better outcomes). • Finding the Gray: It encourages looking for “shades of gray” in situations that feel like absolute extremes. All your favourite influencers are doing DBT skills and they might not even know it!!! Doing things ‘one-mindfully’ is a great way to feel the benefits of mindfulness without having to sit down and do a formal practice or meditation. If you have a terrible memory like me/ADHD you could try putting a post-it note by your kettle or toothbrush to remind yourself that every time you drink a cup of tea/brush your teeth, you will do so ‘one-mindfully’. 🌀🧠
