Repeated positive interactions decrease its natural fear response. When the person finally initiates gentle contact, the squirrel, already feeling somewhat safe, might experience a surprising physiological reaction. Gentle tactile stimulation, like a soft touch or stroking, can trigger the release of hormones like oxytocin in mammals. Oxytocin is often called the “bonding hormone” and is associated with feelings of trust, calmness, and well-being. That moment the squirrel closes its eyes and seems to melt might be a genuine rush of these calming neurochemicals, a completely new and powerful sensation for a wild creature interacting with a human.
