What replaces it is corroboration across independent constraints: Not: “I saw it” “They said it” “It feels fake/real” But: Does it exist across multiple independent sources? Do timestamps, metadata, and context align? Does the claim require fewer assumptions than alternatives? Who benefits from each version being believed? What information is missing, and who controls that gap? That’s the framework professionals use now... not blind trust, but structured doubt.

The Running Man in 1987 showed broadcasters face-swapping runners in real time, using 3D mapping techniques that required hand drawn wireframes because computers couldn’t do it yet. Strange Days in 1995 depicted full sensory recordings that let people experience someone else’s reality, anticipating both VR and the commodification of trauma. But here’s what makes it unsettling. When these films came out, they were science fiction. Fantasies. Cool ideas that felt decades away. Now the technology exists, works better than anyone predicted, and we’re still figuring out what to do about it. The movies warned us.
