👅 Frenzel Equalization Practice (where you equalize your ears using only your tongue and throat muscles).
🌊 Practice this technique everyday on dry land (bonus tip, practice in front of a mirror!). You can also practice different dry land equalization exercises to gain awareness of the muscles involved in equalization. To check that you are doing Frenzel properly, keep 1 hand on your abdomen while you equalize to ensure that you do NOT feel any tension there. Once you get it, keep practicing and practicing everyday - we want to make Frenzel muscle memory!
🥥 Hydration - hydrating with coconut water or electrolytes daily (and especially before a diving session) can help to keep our sinuses from drying out which facilitates equalization. Being hydrated also helps prevent muscle cramps and fatigue on those deeper dives!
🧠 Find presence - use nervous system regulation tools like body scan meditations, visualizations, and mindfulness to drop into your body daily (and especially before a diving session). Even 5 minutes of intentional presence practices per day can lead to a calmer nervous system, better sleep, and deeper relaxation.
🧘♀️Facial massage, lymphatic drainage, and gua sha practices keep everything moving and flowing in our sinuses and can help to alleviate congestion.
🫁 Stretching (specifically focusing on neck, jaw, and diaphragm stretches) makes a big difference in our relaxation and reducing tension. This is especially important as we dive deeper and the water pressure intensity increases.
Important reminder to never practice breath holding activities in water alone.
