ARAccording to the Lotus Sutra, Devadatta chapter, the eight-year-old Naga princess instantly attains perfect enlightenment after comprehending the Lotus Sutra, she directly challenges the patriarchal and biological prejudices against females and species of that time. The male elder Sariputra objects, citing the “five obstacles” that supposedly prevent a woman from becoming a Buddha. In response, the Naga princess made elaborated offerings to the Buddha and instantly transforms into a bodhisattva then achieving Buddhahood in a pure land. This radical narrative was revolutionary, demonstrating that enlightenment is not bound by gender, species, or time.
