YOMeta-owned WhatsApp is developing an optional premium subscription that would offer users access to exclusive features while keeping the core app free, according to a report by WABetaInfo.
The subscription plan is still under development and is being tested through beta versions of the app.
Some users may see a waitlist for the proposed premium tier. WhatsApp has not announced a launch timeline and has said the paid plan would not be mandatory.
According to the report, the initial set of premium features is expected to focus on customization and convenience. These could include exclusive sticker packs, additional app themes, custom app icons, and the ability to pin more than three chats at the top of the app.
Premium users may also get access to exclusive chat ringtones.
WhatsApp is expected to expand the premium feature set over time based on user feedback.
Details of the subscription, including pricing and the final list of features, could change before a public rollout.
