I just got access to an AI software engineer for the first time. It’s called Devin by Cognition. And this thing is insane! My CTO has been using it for the past couple days. He’s blown away… Let me show you how we’re using it and why it’s so helpful. The craziest part about Devin is the multitasking. We’ve actually got 4 different Devins that are all running in parallel working on different things. One is bug fixing. Another is working on building out a new feature. A third is refactoring code. Each one of these Devins is like a junior software engineer that’s working completely on its own. And it frees up my CTO to spend all his time on our hardest engineering problems. For any new feature we want to build, we’re using Devin’s Interactive Planning mode. It scans our entire code base and then helps create a detailed build plan automatically. So it does both the build strategy as well as the execution. Now this is important…Devin is in a completely different category than the vibecoding apps. It’s a true AI engineer that can go end to end on real world features. And here’s the biggest thing I’ve realized… AI software agents like Devin are not designed to replace human engineers… They’re meant to be digital teammates. My CTO will always be the head chef, but now Devin lets him add unlimited sous chefs. So he can delegate the carrot chopping and focus mostly on innovating new recipes. Apparently, Devin wasn't actually writing complex code from scratch, and the demos were more smoke and mirrors than groundbreaking AI. Now, don't get me wrong, AI is making incredible strides.
