The first step was real-time mesh cutting. Right now the system can split a log mesh into two pieces based on the cutting plane. It’s working… but this is only the beginning. Billboards have been around since the early days of 3D games. When hardware couldn’t afford real geometry, devs learned how to fake depth with planes and smart textures. Fast forward to today: GPUs are stronger, techniques are fancier… but foliage is still expensive. Thousands of leaves, overdraw, shadows, lighting. That’s why billboards still matter. They trade geometry for pixels, and when used at the right distance, the illusion is good enough — and the performance gain is huge. Sometimes new tech can’t beat old genius solutions. #gamedev #unrealengine #indiedev #devlog #devdiary
