Everyone’s talking about “digital learning,” but here’s what most schools aren’t saying out loud. Reading real books and handwriting notes aren’t outdated. They activate your child’s brain in ways screens simply don’t. Studies show that print reading and handwriting strengthen the brain networks responsible for language, visual processing, and executive function. Screen-heavy learning? It’s actually linked to weaker connectivity in those same areas. One study even found that reading time boosts connections between the brain’s visual word form area (the VWFA) and the left-hemisphere regions that support language and cognitive control — while screen time reduces those connections. And neurophysiology research shows the same pattern: 
Paper reading = more of the high-frequency brain waves linked to focus (beta + gamma). 
Screen reading = more theta activity — the kind associated with distraction and increased cognitive load. 
Paper helps kids learn deeply. Screens make the brain work harder just to stay focused. I’m not anti-tech — my own kids use screens.
