Knowing the rules of divisibility can make math much easier when the numbers start getting bigger and more complex.
Here’s the quick rule for divisibility by 3:
Step 1: Add all the digits in the number together.
Step 2: Ask yourself: is that sum a multiple of 3?
If the answer is yes, the original number is divisible by 3.
Example:
423 → 4 + 2 + 3 = 9
9 is a multiple of 3, so 423 is divisible by 3.
This isn’t new for many teachers, but it can be really helpful for new teachers, homeschool parents, or students who just need to see math explained in a different way.
