Quicksand is just a supersaturated mixture of sand and water that appears solid until you apply pressure, causing it to “liquefy.” The more you struggle, the more you displace the water, packing the sand tight around your limbs and creating a powerful vacuum. To escape, you have to lean back to distribute your weight across a larger surface area, preventing you from sinking deeper. Guides at Mont Saint-Michel demonstrate that “wiggling” your legs is actually the secret to freedom. By moving slowly, you allow water to seep back into the compressed sand, breaking the vacuum seal and turning the solid mass back into a liquid. This reduces the friction enough for you to slowly slide your legs out.
