Nature is awesome but she can be cruel. We went camping in a treasured spot and found the eastern hellbender salamander that is our namesake. We decided to hit the stream in the early evening to try a challenging fishing hole. Bailly decided not to fish (see: challenging) and watched as JD tried to tempt the pickiest fish we've ever targeted. As Bailly was looking out along the riverbed, something caught her eye. Was it a leaf stuck under a rock? No... that doesn't seem quite right. Maybe it's a fish that doesn't spook as easily as it should... Wait a second... is that a hellbender? That was when Bailly started excitedly bossing JD around. 🤣 "Don't take your eyes off of it! I need to look at my feet so I don't fall!" The hellbender was a ways away and she isn't the most sure footed angler in the bunch. When we finally made it to within a couple of feet, we noticed quickly that something wasn't quite right. Hellbenders aren't known for being brave in the presence of large shadows and heavy movement. This little buddy wasn't fleeing. As Bailly gently lifted it off of the bottom of the river, it barely protested. It's slimy coating that gives it the nickname "snot otter" didn't feel very... snotty. It had strange lesions on it's skin that were packed with sand. This salamander seemed to be overtaken with some sort of fungus. Chytrid was one guess, but we don't know much about other possibilities. We decided to gently place the hellbender back exactly as we had found it, head back to camp, and resolved to check back in the morning. When we went back shortly after sunrise the next day it was no longer alive. We were heartbroken, but we are thankful for the rare opportunity that the circumstances presented us. We have reported the interaction and are waiting to hear back. Have you ever seen an eastern hellbender in the wild? Did your heart beat as fast as ours did? P.s. Some anglers are under the impression that giant salamanders are harmful to the fish population. This is simply not true. Please don't harm these magnificent animals. They need to be protected.❤ . . . . #easternhellbender #wncmountains #natureisamazing #mothernature #flyfishing

Ever wonder how we keep track of our rarer Georgia wildlife? Follow along as our biologists survey for the eastern hellbender! This rare amphibian is found in cold, fast-moving streams in the northernmost edges of our state. The eastern hellbender is a fully aquatic species that stretches up to 2 feet long and can weigh a hefty 5 pounds, making it the largest salamander by weight in North America. Comprehensive surveys have been an ongoing effort since 2011 and have served as an indicator of success for populations of this state-protected amphibian. #Hellbender #GeorgiaWildlife #Georgia #Wildlife #Salamander #AquaticSalamander #Amphibian #Herp #Herpetology #HerpLife #FieldHerping #RareSpecies #ThreatenedSpecies #WildlifeConservation #AmphibianConservation #SciComm #WildlifeEducation #NorthGeorgia #NaturalGeorgia #GeorgiaOutdoors

With no worries, eastern hellbenders grow up to two feet in length in our Southern Appalachian PARCAs (Priority Amphibian and Reptile Conservation Areas). They are very good at staying put, despite the fast-flowing waters they call home. Their long, flattened bodies allow them to fit into crevices under large, flat rocks along the bottom of streams. Eastern hellbenders don’t have to worry about places to breed and nest when ARC Field Biologists install the large slabs of rock they need. We also work on public and private lands to fence cattle out of their habitat, preventing erosion of the streambanks and the resulting silt in these salamanders’ most choice hiding spots. Do you wish you were a worry-free eastern hellbender in a cold Appalachian stream? Follow us for more amphibian and reptile content! Happy Valentine’s Day from this little hellbender. 💕 Though tiny now, this larval salamander could one day become an adult eastern hellbender measuring more than two feet long! Hellbenders are a mascot for clean, fast-flowing stream ecosystems. Their flattened bodies allow them to slip beneath large rocks, where they hunt crayfish, find mates, and dig out their nest sites (the males). And their signature wrinkles? Those aren’t just cute; they increase the surface area for absorbing oxygen directly from the water. Even their large, webbed feet are perfectly suited for gripping onto and navigating through boulder-covered streambeds. But being so specialized for life in one environment comes with its disadvantages, too. These salamanders depend on clear, well-oxygenated water and rock crevices. And when sediment and runoff from developments wash into streams, those critical spaces can become clogged or buried, reducing shelter, hunting, and nesting opportunities. That’s why the survey work you see here is so valuable. Every measurement and observation helps us evaluate population health, reproductive success, and habitat conditions, giving us the information we need to best protect them. Our team is partnering with Great Smoky Mountains National Park to survey hellbenders in some of the most important remaining strongholds for the species. Smokies populations hold crucial genetic diversity, making these rivers especially vital for the eastern hellbender’s future. Across our Southern Appalachian PARCAs (Priority Amphibian and Reptile Conservation Areas), we work with partners and landowners to reduce erosion, protect water quality, and restore the rock habitats hellbenders depend on. A new FWS song called “Hellbender!” just dropped? HELL YEAH!   You got that right, people. Listen to the latest from the Fish & Wildlife Band – “Hellbender!”. This is a surf rock ode to North America’s largest and grooviest aquatic salamander, the Eastern Hellbender. Found in cold streams and rivers across 15 states, this gentle giant has many nicknames – devil dog, ground puppy, mud cat, Allegheny alligator, and ol’ lasagna sides.   Whatever you call it, this critter faces many threats and needs our help! That’s why we’re working with conservation partners, state and federal agencies, and Tribes to protect and ensure healthy habitats for threatened aquatic species like the hellbender. This song by the Fish & Wildlife Band was donated to the USFWS and is intended to raise awareness about hellbenders, crayfish, darters, freshwater mussels, and our other aquatic species and habitats of concern.     Hear the full song on FWS.gov. Hellbender appreciation post 🖤 Did you know the Eastern Hellbender is Pennsylvania’s State Amphibian? As the largest salamander in North America, Eastern Hellbenders can grow up to 30 inches long and weigh 5-6lbs. Hellbenders have lungs, but they use capillaries in the folds of their skin to absorb oxygen from water instead of breathing air! Because of this, it is very important for them to live in clean water.🌊 Learn more about our Eastern Hellbenders in our Reptile & Amphibian Discovery (RAD) Center Wednesday-Sunday from 10-3pm! It’s a fish! It’s a snake! It’s an Eastern hellbender! The Eastern hellbender is the largest salamander in the United States, growing to over two feet long and weighing over four pounds. This one was spotted by visitors at @roanmountainstatepark exploring the Doe River. This impressive species has remained relatively unchanged since the age of the dinosaurs. They live in rivers and absorb oxygen through their skin, making them highly sensitive to pollution and climate change. Hellbenders are considered endangered in Tennessee, with once-abundant populations dropping due to stream impoundment and pollution. However, conservation groups, such as the @nashvillezoo, are successfully spearheading this species’ repopulation in Tennessee! To learn more about their hellbender headstart program, check out the @tnconservationist article in our bio. One way you can help amphibians like the Eastern Hellbender thrive is by not stacking rocks. It may seem like a small act to pull some rocks out of a river and stack them, but the bottoms of rivers and streams are full of aquatic species.  Every rock can be a possible home for larval stages of insects, salamanders, fish, and amphibians like the hellbender, which are especially picky about where they choose to lay their eggs. So, leave those rocks alone so the Hellbenders can find a home!
