Daniel Kish is a visionary who lost his sight but found a way to see the world with sound – through echolocation. Now, the President and founder of World Access for the Blind extends his skills to people with visual impairment, teaching them to use echolocation for enhanced navigation and independence. He has taught this skill to over 500 blind children around the world. #echolocation #navigation #accessibility #blindness #blind #visionimpaired #dolphins

Bats and dolphins echolocate to navigate the skies and the seas. It turns out that humans can echolocate, too—and it could change your brain. This study’s 10-week echolocation training program (20 sessions, 2-3 hours each) taught participants how to use click-based echolocation to perform perception, identification, and navigation tasks. Daniel Kish lost his eyes as a child and, as an adult, has become a pioneer in the use of echolocation among the blind, a skill that he’s developed in order to generate vivid, precise perceptions of his surroundings. A documentary short by the filmmakers Ben Wolin (@wolin) and Michael Minahan (@mike_minahan) follows Daniel as he works with other blind people to give them tools through which they can better perceive the world—and live freely within it. Watch it at the link in our bio.

Daniel Kish may have lost his sight, but he gained a whole new way of seeing through sound. As the President and founder of World Access for the Blind, he’s taught over 500 blind children around the world how to use echolocation to navigate independently and confidently. A true pioneer helping others find their way. Video Credit: 60 Second Docs @60secdocs #echolocation #navigation #accessibility #blindness #blind #visionimpaired

Have you ever wondered how echolocation works?🔊 Echolocation or biosonar, is a biological process used by certain animals, including the sperm whale, to navigate and locate objects in their environment when vision is ineffective, for example at night or in turbid water. It involves the production of sound and the reception and interpretation, using their brain, of the echoes which return from objects. The term “echolocation” was coined in 1944 by Donald Griffin, to describe how bats orient themselves in darkness, and CETI’s principal advisor Roger Payne was actually a research assistant to Donald while @Harvard University studying bat echolocation before he dedicated his career to the study of whales and their protection. The echolocation systems of bats and toothed whales, like sperm whales, are exquisitely sophisticated and it is an example of convergent evolution, the process by which distantly related organisms evolve similar features or adaptations.🐋🦇 To learn more about the echolocation of sperm whales and bats check out the papers, “Blind as a Bat? The Genetic Basis of Echolocation in Bats and Whales” and “Echolocation” at the link in our bio! Animator: @megfenske #CETI #spermwhales #whales #echolocation #ocean #sound #bats #biosonar

Most people have heard that bats use echolocation to navigate and hunt in the dark, but have you ever watched it in action? 🔊🦇 #BatWeek Bats are talkative, social animals! They chatter and make grumpy noises between themselves in colonies, they chatter at rehabbers when we handle them (what we assume to mean "Stop that, I don't want to be manhandled!"), and they make even more sounds that aren't detectable to human ears! These ultrasonic calls are visually observable in some species when they call, though, as demonstrated by this fuzzy Hoary Bat! He is clearly opening his mouth to make sound, but we can't hear it. While bats have tiny eyes, they can fully explore what their surroundings look like in any lighting. Bats are the only mammals who have evolved full flight, and they're among the few who evolved echolocation, as well. We're so fortunate that we can appreciate such fantastic animals in our own back yards! 😍 #hoarybat #bats #wildlifeeducation #echolocation

Under the sand, garden eels stand no chance against the teamwork and precision of bottlenose dolphins! Using echolocation, they send out sound waves to scan the sandy ocean floor, identifying the eels’ that are hidden beneath, then with a pumping snout move they flush them out, and capture prey in a perfect example on how intelligent this dolphins actually are… This was during our Bimini Hammers Expedition final Safari day 2024 cant wait for 2025 ❤️‍🔥 #dolphins #cetaceans #dolphinshunting #gardeneels #bahamas
