The European Union has criminalized ecocide which is defined as unlawful or wanton acts committed with knowledge that there is a substantial likelihood of severe and either widespread or long-term damage to the environment being caused by those acts. Ecocide will be punishable by up to 10 years in prison and/or up to €40 million in fines, and individuals within companies, including CEOs, can be held liable if they were aware of the damage their companies cause. Not every environmental crime is included under this ecocide law, but it does include illegal timber trade, illegal depletion of water resources, pollution caused by ships, conduct causing forest fires, as well as illegal or unreported fishing activity. #ClimateChange #ClimateCrisis #ClimateAction #ClimateJustice #Ecocide

Whales are critical to the health of the oceans and the ecosystem. We hunted them to near extinction over the last two centuries. There is an international moratorium on whaling, but Iceland continues to hunt fin whales, the second largest animal on the planet. Almost all the meat is sold to Japan. Commercial whaling is ecocide, and needs to stop now. We are going through a sixth mass extinction and we need whales to survive. Large whales sequester tons of carbon in their lifetime and fertilize the oceans, helping phytoplankton bloom which creates oxygen. Tell Iceland whaling should end today. Ukrainian state environmental inspectors reported that seahorses (Black Sea species) have been found in large numbers dead along Odesa’s coast, with densities up to 2–92 per square meter in places like Lanzheron Beach. Officials have taken water samples to determine the cause and will release results when available. Recent Russian missile/drone strikes on the Pivdennyi (South) port area caused significant damage to storage tanks holding sunflower oil, leading to a major oil spill into the Black Sea. Authorities and environmental agencies say this spill spread over hundreds of square kilometers, polluted the coast, and caused mass mortality among marine birds and wildlife. Reuters and local Ukrainian officials reported dozens of birds killed by the oil spill after the port was hit by Russian attacks.
