One of the best, cheapest, & most bioavailable sources of calcium is… an egg shell! Egg shells are made almost entirely of calcium carbonate, which is what makes up our nails, teeth, & bones. The calcium in this whole food source is properly balanced with 27 other minerals, making it easier for our bodies to absorb & assimilate the nutrients in the shells. Egg shells also have one of the lowest levels of toxic heavy metals (especially relative to bone meal powder) (PMID: 25954701) Your body maintains your blood calcium level in a tight range for your survival. But with low dietary calcium, the body compensates & pulls from other sources (like your bones) to keep the blood concentration in the desired range. This has been one of my most popular spring projects for many years and for good reason. Here’s a new batch that I made for my youngest this year since she is now old enough to draw on her own. All you’ll need is eggshells and a natural pigment for dye. I’m using dry food ingredients from my pantry. Chalk made with eggshells is more abrasive and works best on sidewalks and pavement but if the eggshells are ground finely enough it will work on indoor chalkboards like the one I showed in the video. For a smoother chalk you can substitute calcium carbonate powder. Both are shown in the video Materials: eggshells (or calcium carbonate powder), flour, natural dry pigments for dye (this time I used turmeric, beet root, matcha, butterfly pea, pink pitaya, strawberry) Instructions: - Rinse eggshells out completely and remove as much of the membrane as possible.
