Embedded Firmware for Beginners Part 1 — What Is Firmware and How It Differs from Software ⸻ In computers, software usually runs on an operating system — like Windows, Linux, or Android. But in embedded systems, firmware is the software that directly controls the hardware. It sits between the hardware and the application layer. Firmware decides how the microcontroller reads sensors, drives outputs, or communicates through UART, I2C, and SPI. Unlike normal software, firmware is stored in non-volatile memory, runs without an OS, and must be optimized for timing, memory, and power. Every byte matters — you write it in C or assembly, tune it for performance, and debug at the register level. So remember: Software runs on systems.
