And I — One common misconception I often run into is that Respectful Parenting means that everything revolves around the kids… which is NOT the case. ❌ And I mean, as soon as siblings are involved, it CAN’T be only about them… because often times, they don’t want/need the same things! 🤪 The goal of Respectful Parenting is to cultivate a family dynamic based upon MUTUAL trust, connection and respect. To view each member of the family as valuable and their needs as valid — that includes us, as parents! ✅ It looks like replacing punishment with boundaries. ✅ Having realistic expectations. ✅ Looking beyond behavior to communicate on a deeper level. In this clip, everyone’s needs were met without anyone getting hurt or any connection being lost in the process. ✨ ➡️ My 4-year-old kept her paintbrush and had someone step in to help her hold her boundary. ➡️ My 2-year-old had someone empathize with her frustration and help her get what she needed so she could paint. ➡️ And I got to keep playing piano in peace afterwards. Largely because I was able to keep my cool (this time.) 💃 I’m sure some of you are asking yourselves if I teach my toddler to “use an inside voice?” 🤫 (I turned the volume down to 20% when she screamed… YOU’RE WELCOME. 🤪) And yes, I do teach her, but not in the traditional sense. When we first got together, whenever the other would start — This is something that Amber and I both had to learn at the beginning of our relationship. When we first got together, whenever the other would start to vent about work stress or share about an emotion we were experiencing, it was almost a knee-jerk reaction to try to “fix” it. After all, this is the nature of our jobs. To help others work through their emotions and get to a healthier place. But we’re not each other’s clients, and we’re not each other’s therapist. Something we started to do when the other person was venting or sharing emotions they were feeling was this. We started to ask, “Do you want solutions or do you just want me to listen?” This did two things: 1. It help the person venting reflect on what they truly needed in that moment, and 2. It allowed the person listening to mange expectations and how to show up in that conversation. The reality was, there were some times when we really did want help finding a solution. However, more often than not, we just wanted the other person to listen. To validate and empathize. It’s honestly wild how much of a difference this simple shift made for us. To have someone truly empathize and validate your emotions is something that is so often taken for granted.
