Ready for another spelling tip? Spelling generalizations are just that…generalizations, they are not hard and fast rules. English is a morphophonemic language which means that it is made up of sounds and meaning. These phonemes and morphemes must be explicitly taught in order to support decoding and encoding. Words that include the ‘wh’ are referred to as submorphemes - a smaller part of a morpheme that holds meaning. Many words that begin with the letters ‘wh’ words are related to a question, water, or air. Teaching students how to break words down into their meaningful parts makes it easier to decode and encode unfamiliar words based on familiar parts! These vowel suffix self-checking task cards are perfect for small group or independent work time! Students: 📍Pick a card 📍Scan the word for the vowel suffix (circle or box it in) 📍Isolate and write the base 📍Write the suffix 📍Read each part, then the whole word 📍Flip the card over to check their work 📍Read the sentence The goal here is to deconstruct each word! The vowel suffix has already been added. Students must recognize the suffixing convention in order to spell the base correctly!
