BLNot only is US mining giant Alcoa destroying the jarrah forest and threatening the survival of critically endangered plants and animals including black cockatoos but they are also producing mountains of toxic waste and don’t seem to have any plan to dispose of it. At Kwinana the company’s tailings from decades of strip mining cover more than 1000 hectares. The waste is toxic and will burn anything living thing that touches it. Huge red mud lakes reaching up to 85 metres smother the landscape with this hazardous material. Does Alcoa plan to deal with this waste or will it simply abandon this highly contaminated site when it finally runs out of bauxite? What is the WA Government doing to ensure WA taxpayers won’t be the ones paying for the decontamination of this toxic site?
This company has been caught out illegally clearing forest critical to nationally protected species. It has been caught out blocking access to water catchment areas by water authorities keen to inspect water quality. It has been caught out illegally piping PFAS contaminated water across a drinking water supply dam. The list goes on and yet so do Alcoa’s operations. The people of Western Australia and the environment are paying the price while Alcoa shareholders laugh all the way to the bank.
