PE3 of my favorite things about teaching in April:
1. C R I T I C A L L E N S E S: I loved my literary criticism classes in college, and love teaching my students new ways of looking at texts. We cover the following lenses: reader response, feminist, marxist, moralist, racial, new historicism, new criticism, psychoanalytical, and biographical. We look at each chapter of our text through a different lens, and students write a paragraph critiquing that chapter through that lens. Then for our summative assessment we write a full 6 paragraph essay analyzing the text through ONE lens.
2. Prepping for end of year a w a r d s : this is literally one of my favorite things that I do for my students. I have about 10 different awards that I create and hand out to my students. All of the awards are based on novels that we read in class. For example we have the Nathaniel Hawthorne award given to students that got all A’s this year. I have the Huck Finn class clown award, Edith Wharton exceptional female student, Ernest Hemingway exceptional male student, Boo Radley good citizenship award, ect. I have to plan out who is getting which awards starting now so that I can get them all printed and I really try to make sure that all of my students get at least one award.
3. MY RELATIONSHIP WITH MY STUDENTS: by this point in the year I’m friends with all of my students. I know what things they are in to, and we have inside jokes. I still get sad at the end of the year saying goodbye to my kids, and at the beginning of the year I’m always sad that I don’t know my new kids as much as I knew my previous students.
