LAThe Equitable building was the straw that broke the camel’s back in terms of zoning in New York. Buildings like this that rose straight up from their base cast massive shadows prompting the first zoning laws to be passed in 1916. A result of these new laws was the shaping of skyscrapers into the iconic setback structure we know today. This would continue until a new zoning law superseded it in the 60s allowing for the glass rectangles that can be found all over New York.
