🧠 Executive Functioning 101 Think of it as your brain’s “control center” — helping you plan, organize, remember, regulate, and get things done. But when those skills are delayed or challenged? 💥 It’s not laziness. It’s not defiance. It’s a signal that support is needed — not shame. 📊 This infographic breaks down: ✅ What executive functioning skills are ⚠️ What the struggles look like 🛠️ And most importantly… the tools that help. ✨ Let’s support brains that think differently. Save this. Share it. Post it in your classroom or clinic. Every child deserves the tools that meet their brain’s needs. #ExecutiveFunctioning #NeurodivergentSupport #ThriveCommunityWorks #ADHDAwareness #BehaviorIsCommunication #EmotionalRegulation #ChildDevelopment #ToolsNotTantrums #InclusiveEducation #SupportDon’tShame #MentalHealthMatters

Executive function is a proactive skill set. That’s why it doesn’t develop when you are reactive. Reminding a kid for the third time, yelling about how you’re sick and tired, constant correction won’t actually help them develop the skill because the skill is proactive. If we want to facilitate a proactive, self-directed effort, then we have to create lines of questioning and collaborative, thinking that are proactive and help a child direct himself. Start in the car on the way home. Make it a routine. Make the questions predictable patterns. #growthmindset #middleschool #parentingtips #teenager #fyp

Someone asked if there are ways to improve your executive function if you grew up in poverty or experienced other kinds of trauma or discrimination. YES! These are free or as close to free as possible, and only require a few minutes on google to get 1,000,000 ideas. None of these are quick fixes, they require both commitment and self-compassion (for when you miss a day, feel like you screwed up, etc.) Be kind to yourself! You’re doing the best you can. ♥️ #socialjustice #antiracism #endpoverty #publichealth #executivefunction

Which executive functioning skill do you struggle most with? For me it’s that shower with a hair wash. Don’t get me wrong I LOVE a good shower, it’s just all of the steps around it that make it seem like SUCH a chore. ADHD often brings along a disruptive force called executive dysfunction, which hampers our ability to plan, organize, and initiate tasks. So, when it comes to something as seemingly simple as showering, executive dysfunction delights in throwing obstacles our way. Distractions become irresistible temptations, diverting our attention from the bathroom and into the abyss of our racing thoughts. Time seems to warp, transforming minutes into seemingly endless hours as we succumb to procrastination. The mere thought of starting a task can trigger a surge of overwhelming emotions, often leading us to avoid it altogether. #executivedysfunction #adhd #audhd #asd #autism #neurodivergent #mentalhealthawareness

Executive functioning skills are cognitive skills that help kids prioritize, organize, manage time, manage emotions, and more... The part of the brain responsible for these skills doesn't develop until the mid-twenties. 💬Comment “BALANCE” for my free wobble board routine + an equipment free option Balance activities to improve executive functioning? Sounds a bit ‘out there,’ but stick with me! 🧠⚖️ Dr. Jeremy Schmahmann, a Harvard neurologist, uncovered a fascinating connection: the cerebellum—known for managing physical balance—also helps regulate emotional equilibrium. He explains, ‘The cerebellum regulates the speed, capacity, consistency, and appropriateness of cognitive and emotional processes.’ Even though it takes up just 10% of brain volume, the cerebellum contains nearly 75% of our brain cells and is the most adaptable part of the brain. By engaging in balance exercises, we’re essentially taking our cerebellum to the gym. This ‘workout’ helps stabilize our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, reducing erratic swings and promoting mental and emotional harmony. While more research is needed on this topic, balance activities are a non-invasive, zero-cost way to potentially improve your child’s executive functioning skills—and they come with plenty of other benefits like increased vestibular input which is a powerhouse for sensory regulation! Want an easy way to get started? I’ve created a FREE wobble board routine + a no-equipment option that is quick and easy to implement! 💬Comment “balance” below, and I’ll send it your way (along with the link to our @outree wobble board and a discount code!)

Want to transform your communication skills? Start with this self-awareness exercise. Record yourself speaking for 5 minutes on any topic. Leave it for a day (this removes the initial self-criticism). Then review it in three stages: Stage 1: Watch on mute Focus purely on body language. What are your hands doing? How do your facial expressions support your message? Notice your posture and movement patterns. Stage 2: Listen without watching Turn the phone around and just listen. Pay attention to vocal qualities: your pace, volume, tone variations, and energy levels. What do you like? What needs work? Stage 3: Get it transcribed This reveals your communication patterns in black and white. You'll spot repetition, circular reasoning, filler words, and structural issues you never noticed before. One session gives you 5-10 concrete improvement areas. That's your roadmap to becoming a more effective communicator. Comment "AMPLIFY" for my 3 part video series where I teach the full process!

Is it ADHD or something else? I view ADHD as a rule-out diagnosis. I believe before receiving a diagnosis, multiple other explanations should be considered first. Anxiety? ADHD and anxiety look a lot alike. Scanning the environment, easily distracted, missing important information, poor working memory. Depression? Both include slow processing speed and poor memory. Rejection Sensitivity in ADHD can lead to depressed mood. Fear? Stress? Overwhelm? If you're balancing a bunch of stuff, you might be absent-minded, distracted, off balance, forgetful, or impulsive. Parenthood? The load of parenting is real. You have to manage your frontal lobe and the lobes of your entire household. There are so many perspectives to consider. From regulation and impulse control to verbal working memory and visual-spatial skills to cognitive flexibility. Oh, and everything in between. • So, how many executive function skills does it REALLY take to construct this play idea from beginning to end? Extra credit if you can name them too 😂.
