From Missionary to My True Mission 🥹 What a journey it’s been. Once upon a time, I was a Mormon missionary, white shirt, tie, a backpack full of scriptures, and a heart full of hope that I was doing exactly what God asked of me. I knocked doors, bore testimony, and prayed for answers. But beneath the surface, there was always another prayer I wasn’t saying out loud: “Can I ever truly be myself and still be loved?” Fast forward, and here I stand today, an openly gay man, a husband, and a dad to the three most beautiful little souls. My life didn’t follow the script I was handed, and thank God for that. Instead, I’ve written my own: one filled with authenticity, courage, and a family built on nothing but love. Some might see these two photos as opposites, missionary to gay dad. But to me, they’re chapters of the same story. One taught me discipline, resilience, and determination. The other is teaching me joy, vulnerability, and what unconditional love really looks like. This isn’t about rejecting where I came from. It’s about honoring it, while also embracing where I was always meant to be. My truest mission turned out not to be saving others, but expanding my own heart enough to love fully, freely, and without shame. So here’s to every LGBTQ+ person who ever wondered if they could have it all, family, fulfillment, and a life that feels like your own. The answer is yes. Maybe not in the way you were taught, but in the way your soul has always known. #exmormon #exmo #gaydad #gayinsta #goodbye #sabrinacarpenter

Unconventional things I do as a Reconvert to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.... - * I have an extremely hard time going to second hour. With my ADHD I’ve never been one to enjoy sitting still for long periods of time. After a bad experience with a lesson I had a while back (it’s the people not the doctrine) I have a hard time getting myself to go and enjoy it. I tend to skip second hour. I am trying to stop but it’s hard to find enjoyment in it. - * I strongly believe God has bigger problems than Tattoos. Temples are beautiful buildings with art. I strongly believe that as long as the tattoo of your choice isn’t offensive, hateful or blasphemous GOD DOESNT CARE. Permanent art on a temporary vessel as I always say. - * I have terrible language. I got in the habit of cussing like a sailor. As I grow closer to God I am trying to replace and clean up my language. I know I’m still a candidate for the Celestial Kingdom even with bad language. However I do believe that clean language is respectful to God and he does appreciate and value my effort. - * Many of us grew up in households that taught us never to question but I always encourage people to pray for a testimony of the restoration of the gospel no matter the state of your faith. Asking God those questions help strengthen our foundation and relationship with him. If I had not been pushed to ask these questions my testimony would NOT be what it is today. - * •I drink kombucha even though it contains green tea. I am missing a CHUNK of my digestive organs and l’ve noticed that as I drink it l’ve started to digest like a normal person. I do believe every case is different and sometimes with the guidance of your bishop it’s ok to not fully follow the Word of Wisdom for health reasons. Everyone should to their full ability but in some cases breaking a rule will help more than hurt. I love you all 🫶🫶 #churchofjesuschristoflatterdaysaints #faith #exmo #faithcrisis #jesuschrist

2020.. what a year. While writing this, I realized how much of my deconstruction story I had forgotten, or thought I had remembered— only to be proven wrong by my photo albums. I had to go back through old pictures to piece it all together and I’m still unsure of the exact details. (My nervous system tries really hard to forget 😮‍💨) In 2020, I still believed in the church’s teachings and core beliefs. I believed in the Book of Mormon, I trusted the prophet, I still had a testimony.. But mentally and physically, I had pulled away— mostly because my anxiety with attending church had become unbearable. I had stopped going to church regularly and stopped wearing my garments 24/7 because they felt uncomfortable and overwhelming. Instead of seeing those things as signals worth listening to, I treated them like personal failures.. but because I still believed in the church I trusted that God would understand. When church went online, the pressure eased. We still watched and participated at times, but our little family suddenly had more space— less structure, less expectation, less constant reinforcement. And in that space, we noticed something unexpected. Life felt lighter. Sundays felt more peaceful. Which only added another layer of doubt to my constantly growing shelf. All of my earlier experiences — my temple experience, my sealing, and my growing awareness of conditional love— were still there. I hadn’t resolved them— I didn’t know how. So I learned to push them down and keep going. Toward the end of 2020, I tragically lost a friend to suicide, and another close friend left the church. The grief from those events made certainty feel safer than questioning. The loss of life made me want to believe more deeply in heaven and eternal families. And watching someone willingly walk away from those beliefs— and what I had always been taught was truth— shocked and unsettled me. What I know now is that it was jealousy. She did something with her doubts— while I was still trying to bury mine. By the end of 2020, I was trying to lean into the church harder, but my doubts were no longer quiet. They were starting to ask for answers. Part 6 coming soon. #exmo

Ex-Mormons are right about a few things👇🏽 1️⃣ You don’t “know” that the church is true 🧐 It’s impossible to “prove” that the church is true. You can know for yourself, but can you transfer your testimony and spiritual experiences to someone else? Nope, they’ll need to find that truth on their own 2️⃣ Spiritual burnout is real😓 Why do members think this isn’t real? Because it hasn’t happened to them. If you’re feeling pressured to live to a standard that is unrealistic, then you can quickly burnout and turn away from the church 3️⃣ We shouldn’t shove hard church facts to the side🫤 Instead of avoiding hard parts about church history, we should study them deeper. Arming ourselves with knowledge and the Spirit is the best defense against Satan 4️⃣ Bad experiences in the church CAN destroy your testimony 🫣 Ex-Mormons often gaslight members into thinking our beliefs are dumb. But members also gaslight Ex-Mormons into thinking their negative experiences at church didn’t really happen. They most likely did, and we need to love them and feel compassion for them instead of disregarding their experiences 5️⃣ It’s possible to feel the Spirit in other churches 🙏🏽 If someone leaves the church and joins another, that’s a much better alternative to abandoning God altogether. Our church doesn’t have a monopoly on the Spirit and the Lord works with His children in various ways Anything I missed? #lds #mormon #exmormon #exmo #churchofjesuschristoflatterdaysaints

In my experience. Much love to them, as always This is really based off the comment/claim I’ve seen several times where they’ll say, something to the effect of, “the church taught me to be this judgy/this way/etc. why would I change when I left?” Which has layers— but the center is empty. The gospel never teaches us to shame, judge, or belittle. That wasn’t the church, that’s just you. #mormon #prolds #ldschurch #exmormon #exmo

Growing up LDS in Michigan, I got the same questions over and over again. In hindsight, I probably should not have been so sarcastic with my responses. And before you start chugging HATERade, I do believe LDS are Christian, they don’t still practice polygamy and the majority of Christians are not mean. #ldshumor #lds #exmo #utah #prolds
