MAEye vs. “Cheek” Squeezes:
And how to tell them apart
The orbicularis oculi muscle can move distinct sections independently. A system for taxonomizing facial motions, the Facial Action Coding System (FACS), refers to two of these sections as:
cheek raiser - marked specifically by the orbital region contracting
&
lid tightener - marked specifically by the palpebral region contracting (or, even more specifically by the preseptal area - but more on that on my FACS Cheat Sheet)
Artists and FACS coders often confuse these two movements, which is totally understandable!
