⚠️ Then solids get pushed too fast, too hard, or too emotionally And suddenly:
😬 Meals become tense
📉 Intake drops
🙅‍♂️ Your child starts resisting again
💭 And you think, “Not this again. I can’t do this again.” Here’s the truth most parents aren’t told 👇
Bottle aversion doesn’t magically disappear.
It teaches the nervous system to protect itself. So when solids are introduced without a plan:
🧠 Pressure sneaks back in (even unintentionally)
🍽️ Hunger cues get overridden
🔒 Trust gets fragile again
🚫 And the brain says, “Nope. We’re not doing this.” This is why transitioning to solids after aversion has to be strategic, not milestone-based. That means:
⏰ Timing matters
🥄 Volume matters
🗣️ How you respond to refusal matters
📊 And growth absolutely matters You are not dramatic for being scared to mess this up.
You’re perceptive. And just to be clear, this isn’t meant to scare you or make you second-guess yourself. Most parents navigating this are doing their absolute best with the information they have. This is simply about awareness. Some kids need a more thoughtful transition because of their history and that doesn’t mean anything is wrong with you or your child. We offered Pediasure by mouth first, but she didn’t like it so we went with the ngtube. It helped her gain weight significantly! However she still isnt eating enough, so she has the gtube just in case it’s gonna be long term. #ftt #failuretothrive #ngtube #gtube

This has absolutely nothing to do with putting babies on diets or calorie counting for children. It broke my heart when doctors told me she was “failure to thrive”. And that she would need a feeding tube if things didn’t improve. But I couldn’t accept that as our fate. Being a nutritionist (and her mom) I felt obligated to find a better way. Despite what genetics, specialists, and the scale was telling us. So I studied children’s nutrition, the role sensory and oral motor skills in eating, met with feeding specialists, other parents around the world. After years of digging and making mistakes I found a better way to feed my daughter. And it changed our lives. Today she’s one of the most adventurous eaters out there. Failure to thrive, still cringe when I hear that diagnosis. That’s exactly what we felt like as parents when Ella received it too. Isn’t feeding your baby supposed to be natural and the most basic thing you have to do as parents? Not hardly. 3 years, multiple surgeries, specialist, hospital stays, and 2 types of feeding tubes later, here we are. She’s come so far with the help of speech therapist, nutritionist, and GI doctors all of which we are so grateful for! in september 2020, in the middle of a pandemic, my daughter stopped eating at 3 months old and was labeled “failure to thrive.” I felt terrified, confused and honestly pretty powerless. there was no reason as to why, but she had a severe case of reflux and colic and screamed all day. in my body, I knew something deeper was off. what helped us wasn’t one magic fix, it was a slow unraveling of layers. listening, trying, trusting, and being willing to look beyond the standard script when it wasn’t working for her. here’s what made a real difference for *US* (not saying this will work for everyone): – pediatric chiropractic care to address tension and alignment in her body – craniosacral therapy to support her nervous system and feeding reflexes – a strict elimination diet for me while breastfeeding (for 2.5 years) to reduce inflammation and triggers – functional stool testing (not the basic hospital labs) to understand what was actually happening in her gut so we could give her the appropriate probiotics and supplements – genetic testing that revealed MTHFR variants affecting detox and nutrient processing – NAET treatments to help with sensitivities and stress responses – constant nervous system support: co-sleeping, baby wearing, contact naps, slowing wayyyyy down – occupational therapy to support sensory processing and regulation – and honestly, time, intuition and a lot of trial + error I was judged so hard for not putting her on a feeding tube. people thought I was being reckless or in denial, but intuitively I knew that pumping food into her body wasn’t going to solve the problem …because the issue wasn’t just intake - something was off at a cellular level, and I needed to understand why before forcing anything. over time, I stopped seeing her “not eating” as a problem to fix and started seeing it as communication. her body was telling me something was wrong long before anyone had language for it. this is NOT medical advice. it’s not an answer, either. it’s just our story, our path and what helped our baby thrive again. doing all of this in 2020 while isolated, scared and cut off from so much support changed me forever. cont’d ⬇️

This may surprise you, but my son’s birth taught me lots about how I chose to start solids for him. ❤️‍🩹He was born by unplanned cesarean. Research shows that babies born by cesarean have higher rates of pathogenic strains of bacteria in their gut microbiomes. They also have less similar strains of their mother compared to babies born vaginally. 😔Because of my son’s birth, he had chronic symptoms as a baby (spit up multiple times per day, all day— and no it wasn’t a tongue tie!) 😌So that meant when I started solids I needed to be really intentional and I actually used it as a time to build his gut and balance his microbiome. 🫶🏼I did preliminary work too when he was EBF by focusing on my own gut health and nourishment. 🐓When I started my son on plain homemade chicken stock, he did one belch and never spit up again! ✅Since then I’ve been teaching moms how to start solids “the gut health way” and I hear stories every day about chronic symptoms (eczema, mucus poo, reflux, constipation etc) gone! 💛Essentially, your baby’s gut microbiome is a barometer for health.
