A hurricane is a powerful tropical storm that forms over warm ocean waters. It’s a type of cyclone, which means it’s a system of rotating winds organized around a central area of low pressure. Hurricanes are known for their strong winds, heavy rain, and storm surges (rising sea water pushed onto land).
They usually form when ocean water is at least 26°C (about 79°F) or warmer. Warm, moist air rises from the ocean, creating clouds and thunderstorms. As the system grows, the Earth’s rotation makes the winds spin around the center, called the “eye.” The eye is often calm, but it’s surrounded by the “eyewall,” which has the most intense winds and rain.
Hurricanes are categorized from 1 to 5 on the Saffir-Simpson scale, with Category 5 being the most destructive. They can cause flooding, damage to buildings, and power outages when they hit land.
