What is finger posturing when it relates to autism? Finger or hand posturing involves holding the hands or fingers in unusual positions, such as the fingers splayed out and twisted at odd angles. It can also involve repeated movements or positions of the hands or fingers, such as flapping, flicking, or bending of the fingers. This behavior can vary in intensity and frequency from person to person, and it can occur in different situations. This is a behavior often observed in people with autism. There are many different forms of posturing which can also include face and body posturing, which can be seen in conjunction with finger posturing. Do you know someone that finger postures? #autistic #autismawareness #thisisautism #autism #nonspeaking #autismacceptance #nonverbal #girlswithautism #autistictoddler #fingerposturing #autistickids #autistictraits #autismsigns #signsofautism #autisticlife

I posted about this in my stories and so many people have replied that I figured it needed to be a post. 😂 These clips are actually not Abby! This is her little sister, Elsie. She just turned 4 a little over a month ago. I’ve mentioned a few times in posts and stories our suspicions that she may be autistic too, and she actually has an evaluation coming up! Believe me, more updates will be coming about all of that. And also all of her autistic traits, because it’s not all the same as Abby. But in the meantime, let’s talk about finger posturing! I first saw this referenced in another Instagram post years ago, and then happened to see it in a picture of Abby from when she was 2. I literally do not remember her doing it, and I can only find a handful of pictures of her with postured hands, so it must have been a pretty short phase. But when I first saw Elsie do it, I recognized it immediately. 👀 The summer she was 2 we noticed it a lot, particularly when she was overwhelmed or really focusing on something. Now here we are at 4 and it’s still the same. It’s like a little clue about how she’s feeling. She can be doing her best masking, but those hands always give away when she’s actually stressed. In conversations about early autistic traits, hand flapping is often one of the first things asked about. And yeah, that is a really common example of stimming, but it is certainly not the only one! And before anyone tries to tell me that hand posturing alone doesn’t mean she is autistic, trust me, I know. I have a whoooole list of other things that didn’t make it into this post. Feel free to stick around if you want to find out what they are! 😉 *I also had an interesting convo with a friend who has a neurotypical 2 year old about this. I asked her if her son had ever done anything resembling hand posturing or if, to her knowledge, NT kids ever did that. She mentioned kids often doing odd hand/finger movements as they are developing fine motor skills, but they would only be for a few days. She also sent some examples of her son doing things like that, and there was a noticeable difference in the tensity / duration of his finger movements!

Finger posturing—like holding fingers in stiff or unusual positions or repetitive movements like flicking or wiggling—is something often seen in autistic individuals. It can be a form of stimming (self-stimulatory behavior) or a way to regulate sensory input. It’s also sometimes linked to motor planning differences. Because I have an autistic child, I had a better understanding of traits to look out for and my son (my second) engaged in finger posturing consistently. But context really matters. While finger posturing can be one sign of autism, on its own, it doesn’t mean a child is autistic. In my son’s case, it seems to be just one of his unique sensory preferences. I also looked out for other traits—like social communication differences or rigidity in routines. Every child is different. One trait doesn’t define a diagnosis—but noticing patterns can help us better understand and support our kids early on. #autism #autistic #autismacceptance #autismawareness #signofautism #signsofautism #autistictrait #fingerposturing #disabilityawareness

🖐️ Finger Posturing is a super common, yet relatively unknown trait of Autism. It can range from clear to subtle - but usually needs to be present relatively often for it to be considered a sign of a possible Autism diagnosis. ❌ So no, playing with your fingers every once in a while is not an Autism characteristic. ✅ Yes, shaping or tensing your fingers or body parts multiple times a day would be considered an Autism characteristic- especially if combined with other characteristics, or if it’s by the side of the eyes while your child watches. 🙋🏼‍♀️ I personally hold my hands out in somewhat unusual or unnatural/awkward ways - without realizing it because it’s natural for me! I also make a fist with my fingers curled around each other while I sleep. Have questions or comments about finger posturing or finger splaying? Posturing is a word we have recently discovered… we have always just referred to certain things as simply “Stimming”. Posturing is a form of stimming, and can range from holding body limbs in unusual ways, e.g holding their hands, fingers and toes in unusual positions, arching their back, finger splaying and observing things with “side eyes”. We are two years into this world of Autism, and we learn something new everyday ❤️ #autism #stimming #learningdisability #autismawareness #posturing #nonverbal #communication #neurodivergent #fyp #foryou

Day 10: Autism Awareness + Acceptance Month Stimming! Spinning, jumping, swinging, scripting, looking at lights, finger posturing, humming, tapping…just to name a few! Stimming is important for so many individuals to maintain a state of regulation. We not only need to allow stimming (as long as it isn’t harmful), but we need to end the stigma and odd looks that it often elicits. Stimming is important! What are some of your child’s favorite stims? #autismawareness #autismacceptance #stimming #stims #selfstimulatorybehavior #justkeepstimming #autismjourney #visualstim #auditorystim #tactilestim

Finger posturing was something I noticed in Hallie from a young age. I always wonder led why her fingers were always tensed and pouting out. As well why she was so obsessed with watching her hands. @mrsspeechiep is an amazing speech therapist and her account is so informative. Had to remix this one. 🤍🤍🤍 #earlysignsofautism #autism #autismawareness
