Looks Accessible, But Is It?! I’m in a hotel bathroom that is supposedly wheelchair accessible, so let’s test your accessibility knowledge. You get five seconds to look around and tell me in the comments what's accessible and what's not before I point out what’s actually going on. How many did you get? Let me know in the comments. Here are just some of the things we picked up on: - The mirror is too high. From my wheelchair I can only see the top of my head. It just needed to be lower. - The emergency cord is there, but it doesn’t reach the floor, so no one could pull it in an emergency. - There are moveable grab rails on each side of the toilet which is a positive - The shower has no grab rails and no shower chair. What am I meant to do, shower in my powerchair? We had to ask on 2 different occasions before they eventually bought a shower stool to the room. - The space is good, but small details haven’t been considered. I can’t reach the hook. I can’t reach the towels. The basics just aren’t set up. Despite it saying on our booking I was a Wheelchair User and the receptionist helping us at check in seeing I was a wheelchair user we were initially sent to a standard (and therefore inaccessible) room. Before having to go back down to reception and move rooms. It’s a reminder that accessibility is more than a couple of grab rails or a ramp. It’s about whether a disabled person can actually use the space safely and independently. How many access issues did you spot? Comment below.
