BE“flanging” was originally discovered as an effect by les paul in the 40s/50s, but the effect was later expanded upon by ken townsend at abbey road studios after john lennon expressed frustration and fatigue at recording dual vocal tracks. ken townsend devised automated double tracking (ADT) to help with lennon’s frustrations.
when lennon asked how the process worked, george martin responded:
“now listen, it’s very simple. we take the original image and we split it through a double vibrocated sploshing flange with double negative feedback”
lennon then continued to say “ken’s flanger”. the first beatles track to feature flanging was “tomorrow never knows” in 1966
