PHWork (Physics)
Definition:
Work is done when a force causes an object to move in the direction of the force.
In simple words:
👉 If you push something and it moves, you have done work.
👉 If you push but it does not move, no work is done (in physics).
Formula of Work
Where:
W = Work
F = Force
d = Distance moved in the direction of force
If force and motion are not in the same direction:
(θ = angle between force and displacement)
Unit of Work
The SI unit of work is Joule (J)
1 Joule = Work done when a force of 1 Newton moves an object 1 meter.
Important Points
✔ Work is a scalar quantity (it has magnitude only).
✔ No movement = No work (in physics).
✔ Work can be:
Positive (force and motion in same direction)
Negative (force opposite to motion)
Zero (no displacement)
Examples
Lifting a book upward → Positive work
Friction stopping a moving ball → Negative work
Pushing a wall that does not move → Zero work
