WHICH WATCH WOULD SURVIVE A 62-MILE RACE? 👀😅
I ran the Bandera 100K wearing both an Apple Watch Series 10 and a Garmin Forerunner 970 to see how their distance tracking compared over an ultra!! 🫣
Bandera is a rocky, technical trail race through the Texas Hill Country — and a perfect place to test GPS tracking over long distances 🤝😎
🌵 How this test worked:
• Both watches worn on the same wrist
• Both tracking the same 100K race
• Garmin used as the baseline reference
• On screen you can see how the distance gap changed throughout the race
🌵 What happened:
Everything was going smoothly… until mile 42.
That’s when the Apple Watch died. 💀
From that point forward, the experiment continued with Garmin recording the rest of the race.
🚨 Final numbers:
Garmin distance: 64.32 miles
Official race distance: 62.13 miles
If you run trail ultras, you already know watches almost always record long. Aid station wandering, stepping off trail, GPS bounce in canyons, bathroom breaks in the woods… it adds up fast.But that’s part of the fun of comparing the data.
‼️ Important disclaimers:
• Both watches were started/stopped a few seconds apart
• Wearing two watches on one wrist can slightly affect GPS signal
• GPS accuracy varies based on terrain, tree cover, and satellite connection

I ran the Honolulu Marathon wearing both an Apple Watch Series 10 and a Garmin Forerunner 970 on the same wrist, during the same race - to see which watch tracked the marathon most accurately!!! 🤯
🌺 How this test worked: 🌺
🥥 Both watches were worn on my left wrist
🥥 Both tracked the same 26.2-mile race
🥥 Accuracy was judged by:
– Distance recorded
– Mile splits compared to official course mile markers
– Final time compared to my chip time
🥥 On screen, you’ll see how closely each watch’s mile splits matched the course-posted splits
🌺 The assumption: 🌺
I’m assuming the @honolulumarathon course is accurately measured at 26.2 miles, and that chip time is the best real-world reference point.

One watch tracked closer to the official course markers and chip time — and the split consistency honestly surprised me 👀

‼️ Important disclaimers (because science + running is never perfect):
• I started and stopped the watches about 4 seconds apart
• Wearing two watches on the same wrist can slightly affect arm swing and GPS signal
• GPS accuracy can be influenced by:
– Tall buildings
– Course turns
– Aid station weaving
– Crowds
– Satellite connection timing
• Wrist-based GPS will never be 100% perfect — especially over 26.2 miles
• And yes… I’m just a girl running a marathon, not a lab study 🥲😂

SUThis is what four months of consistent swim-bike-run training did to my Garmin marathon prediction time…It didn’t drop quite far enough to reach my ultimate dream goal 🥲😅😭 but to be honest, that was always a long shot anyway 🫣 Still, seeing the progress is motivating, and if I can deliver anything close to this on race day, I’d be incredibly happy. But if I’m honest, I do wonder how realistic that is when I look at my past Garmin predictions and race results.
Every single 10K and half marathon I’ve ever run, my Garmin prediction has always been far more ambitious than what I actually managed to run. I’ve never beaten a prediction (not once🥺) and often I wasn’t even close 😂
On the other hand, I’m definitely not going to fixate on these numbers. They’re just predictions, after all. And in the end, I’ve had a genuinely good training block; solid consistency, strong sessions, and every marathon-pace workout felt surprisingly smooth. So I’m choosing to trust that as well😌 We’ll see what all of this adds up to on race day..
