MYAlien life form? 👽 No - it’s a slime mould.
It is not really a fungus, and it is not an animal either. It is a myxomycete, with a plasmodium - one giant multinucleate cell. It can move surprisingly fast. In just a few hours, it can spread across large parts of a branch or leaf.
The first two clips show Fuligo septica.
The last clips show the rarer yellow Stemonitis splendens, also known as the chocolate tube slime mould.
The forest is full of things that feel unreal when you stop and look closer. Some researchers suggest that slime moulds show signs of intelligence. I would not be surprised if that were true.

When compared in daylight, Amanita franchetii and Amanita rubescens to the untrained eye, would look very similar. Using UV light they’re very easy to tell apart. Mycologists aren’t exactly sure why certain mushrooms glow under UV light but it’s suspected it could be to attract, or deter insects that see in that spectrum. Not only is UV fun but the glow may also have practical applications to help narrow down species or spot them at night. If you’re lucky enough to have access and you’re able to explore nature safely at night, it’s a great experience! It’s not just fungi that glow, flowers, mosses, lichen, bugs, and minerals in rocks can all surprise you, get yourself a 365nm torch and get outside.
