Early in my formulation days, we had a soap that was our best seller. Distributors loved it and orders were coming in consistently. Then suddenly complaints started coming in. Distributors began telling us the soap was bad. Some said it had turned watery. Others said the smell was terrible, like rotten eggs. At first I honestly didn’t believe it because this was a formula we had been selling for years. Nothing had ever gone wrong with it. But before we could fully investigate, the soaps we had shipped out started coming back. About 20 distributors were returning products. That was a huge financial loss and it was scary because this was early in the business. Losing that kind of money could have easily collapsed everything we had built. When I got to the office that day, I told my team to open the soaps we still had on the shelf. To our shock, the same thing had happened. The paste soap had turned watery and the smell was terrible. So I started investigating , checking everything carefully, I realized the problem was not the formulation. It was the raw material. The African black soap base we had sourced from our supplier was no longer the same quality, even though we assumed it was , to confirm, I collected another batch from the same supplier, made the soap again, and watched it closely. Right before my eyes, the same thing happened. The soap began to break down and smell bad. That day taught me one of the biggest lessons in formulation. Your formulation can be perfect, but bad raw materials can destroy your business. We lost money. We lost some customers too. Some people understood, but some never came back. Instead of giving up, we learned from it. That experience pushed us to become extremely strict about sourcing. Today we check every raw material carefully, and many of our ingredients are sourced directly from verified suppliers with proper analysis reports. In formulation, you learn as you go and one small mistake with raw materials can cost you years of hard work. _ Did you have any experience like this ? Let’s know !
