JEOn Monday, February 23, a former lead ICE instructor and lawyer named Ryan Schwank testified at a congressional forum in DC held by Senator Richard Blumenthal and Representative Robert Garcia. Schwank, who resigned from the agency on February 13, presented internal documents alleging that the ICE Academy drastically slashed training requirements to fast-track thousands of new agents. He said that the curriculum was cut from 584 hours down to 344 hours, reducing a 72-day program to just 42 days.
Schwank claims these cuts gutted essential instruction on constitutional rights and safety. He testified that a two-hour course on the Fourth Amendment was reduced to just ten minutes and that he was given secretive orders to teach recruits they could enter private residences without judicial warrants.
Schwank warns that sending under-trained agents into the field creates a high risk for unlawful arrests and dangerous public safety failures
The Department of Homeland Security denies these claims
