PASpring is here, enjoy some Frippertronics. It’s been a while since I set this up, there are always challenges. Previously it was decks of 2 different heights affecting the tape path. This time I have the same model, but the spool of tape is too long. If deck 1 has more spooled tape, the weight causes it to run faster than the take up deck (2). Slowing down deck 1 with the pause lever every so often fixes that, and has the added bonus of beautiful tape slurs. Although, a longer tape length means more playing time. Ideally the spools will be balanced, or deck 2 is the faster. Playing a Tele into a TEAC mixer, which is blended with playback from deck 2 then sent back into deck 1, which is recording. Once the tape spool runs out, the entire recording is on it. I got lost for hours and hours. Deep in preparations for next month’s residency in Cornwall with @dyski.co 〰️

We’ve added a new feature to our cosmic tape looper, which is control over the loop decay in Frippertronics Mode!
Hold shift and turn Start to dial in the perfect loop fade, or dynamically change it with CV by swapping out the Start CV Destination in Narwhal!
Here we patch some modulation to the Fripp decay, and in combination with a fast loop and some effects, the result is sonically explosive!

MOModern tools, like digital delays, make it very easy to create interesting Frippertronics set-ups. This technique was developed using reel to reel tape machines, making it possible to create long delays used as loops that could be overdubbed. In this video I use the Xaoc devices Samarkanda to explain the concept, dive into sound design with delays, and even create multi-loop jam setups.

Feels good to have the quarter stack fitting back in to the active arrangement. Put a simple frippertronics minded board together to test some ambience.
First loop is an infinite sound-on-sound in the Boss DD20 with @chasebliss Reverse Mode C and @walrusaudioeffects Slöer active. Blooper runs another loop, still with Rev and Slöer influence. And everything finishes through Qi Etherealizer

LLUnecessary #tbt to the song ”All that is solid etc”. A school piano played by Per-Olof Stjärnered recorded with two very cheap microphones, because I had forgotten the expensive ones at home.
The original track was just fairly simple chords. I then put it through four tape delays with different delay times, one of them with an octave pitch shift. I guess it’s what Robert Fripp would call Frippertronics.
Originally recorded for a Baenet-song that was never finished.
