BEThe concept of cognitive energy may help explain something we often refer to as sundowning—a pattern where people with dementia become more restless, agitated, or disoriented later in the day.
We don’t fully understand why this happens, but we do know that their cognitive capacity isn’t what it used to be. Mental effort takes more out of them—and they have less to begin with.
So if you know a day is going to be cognitively challenging, try to build in mental breaks and offer extra support during the late afternoon and evening hours. Their brain may simply be tired. They’re doing the best they can.
