WIFollowing Compost Week, we’ve had a few questions about how the upcoming food waste collections are different to home composting. Here’s how they compare 👇
🍃 Home composting
Great for fruit and veg peelings and garden waste - when combined with paper and cardboard. But things like cooked food, meat, fish, dairy, and leftovers can attract pests or create smells, so most people can’t add them to a garden composter.
♻️ Food waste collections
Your caddy can take every kind of food scrap, raw or cooked. It’s then processed in a specialist facility that turns it into biogas and nutrient‑rich fertiliser. This keeps far more waste out of general bins and puts it to good use.
Home composting is fantastic if you have the space for it, but it can’t deal with all types of food waste. That’s why the kerbside food waste service is designed to work alongside it – not replace it.
Weekly food waste collections start from 6 July. And for tips on home composting, search for 'composting' on our website.
