TEGoogle’s “Aluminium OS” (ALOS) is shaping up to be a major shift in desktop computing.
Leaked via Google’s Issue Tracker, early screen recordings reveal a desktop-optimized OS that merges Android and ChromeOS into a single platform.
The system appears to run on an Android 16 base, combining a ChromeOS-like taskbar with an Android-style status bar. One of the biggest surprises is Chrome on Android finally supporting desktop extensions, something previously limited to full desktop builds.
The leak also shows strong multitasking upgrades, including split-screen workflows and true desktop window controls like minimize, fullscreen, and close. Testing was spotted on an HP Elite Dragonfly 13.5 Chromebook with a 12th-gen Intel processor, hinting at serious x86 compatibility.
Google is reportedly targeting a 2026 launch, possibly built on Android 17. With Gemini AI deeply integrated and full Android app support, Aluminium OS looks like Google’s strongest attempt yet to challenge Windows and macOS in the premium laptop space.
