Halifax, Nova Scotia — January 18, 2025
A treacherous winter storm turned a steep residential street into a hazardous slide on Saturday morning. Residents watched in horror as vehicles lost traction on the slick, ice-covered pavement, leading to a series of unavoidable collisions that blocked traffic for several hours.
The footage captures the moment a black crossover loses control while descending the steep hill. As the driver attempts to navigate the icy slope, the car begins to spin, eventually slamming sideways into a silver sedan that was attempting to navigate the roadway in the opposite direction. Bystanders at a nearby bus stop can be heard shouting warnings as the impact sends both vehicles sliding uncontrollably toward the curb.
Witnesses quickly checked on the occupants of the vehicles, and emergency services were called to the scene to assess the damage. Local police have since closed the roadway to all traffic until sanding trucks can treat the surface and remove the wreckage. While the damage to the vehicles was significant, authorities confirmed that no life-threatening injuries were reported from the scene.
City officials are reminding residents to exercise extreme caution on side streets, which may not be salted as frequently as main arteries during sudden freezes. They advise drivers to avoid steep hills during icy conditions and to ensure their vehicles are equipped with appropriate winter tires to mitigate the risk of sliding.
