FLYou might think that firing pots is the final step in the creation process but alas, this terrible step comes last. The grinding of the lids to get rid of the scraping sound they produce after being reduction fired.
When bisque fired the clay on the undersides of the lids is glassy-smooth. I burnish it to be so, yet the final firing to cone ten, 1290ºC, causes the stoneware to shrink again around the coarse particles the clay contains, the grog, thus the burnishing I did at the leather hard stage reverts back to being gritty. It’s still better that it would be if I didn’t do any burnishing at all.
The lapping paste is used on the undersides of the lids, the two parts are twisted together until the pieces run smooth again, then it’s all washed off with soapy water, the vessels now finally complete.
